3 AM Text Messages

They’re never good, and not in a “Texts From Last Night” way to us old codgers. Of course, it’s deer season, so the text from my older brother at a quarter after four saying “Get up-deer are moving” was no surprise. It was the other one, that he had sent 45 minutes earlier. “I won’t be there. Arnold died of a heart attack last night”.

I’ve known Arnold my whole life. My brother’s best friend, he was a giant of a man. Gruff but gentle, a booming voice that rarely uttered an oath, he had hands the size of dinner plates that could lovingly cup a mourning head or, most famously when he once lost his temper in a bar many years ago, crush a rocks glass.

His parents lost another son many years ago to a firearms accident, and now they have lost Arnold, who lived right next door to them. He has a daughter, and a son in college who may one day play offensive line in the NFL given his size and speed and smarts. He was a good man, and my world is poorer for his absence.

Remember, O Lord, your servant in your Kingdom.
